Police have failed to figure out why college student Sohagi Jahan Tonu has been killed in Comilla, much less recognise the killers even a month into the killing.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police say they can only confirm that the murder, which triggered nationwide protests, was premeditated.
CID Comilla-Noakhali region’s Special Superintendent of Police Nazmul Karim Khan says they suspect that several people had carried out the killing.
But, he could not say why the Victoria Government College student was murdered.
On seeing Tonu’s corpse inside the Comilla Cantonment on the night of Mar 20, police suspected she had been raped before the murder.
Amidst raging protests throughout Bangladesh, forensic experts said they did not find any evidence of rape during examinations on her remains.
A second post-mortem was conducted following a court order 17 days ago, but the findings have not been made public.
After a visit to the crime scene on Tuesday by special CID team from Dhaka, SP Khan told reporters, “This was a planned murder. But we don’t know the cause of death yet.”
The doctors who had conducted the post-mortems had told the CID that they could not determine the cause of death, he added.
Tonu’s body was found several hundred yards from her home inside the cantonment. Her father is a fourth-class employee at the Cantonment Board.
Khan said, 52 people of the area have been questioned since the case was started by Tonu’s father last month. But police are yet to make any arrest.
“Everyone is helping us. We hope to get a breakthrough soon,” he said.
After the murder last month, Kotwali police had started the investigation. But soon the case was transferred to the Detective Branch before the CID were put on it.
The Dhaka CID team on Tuesday afternoon also met Tonu’s family and army officials in the cantonment.
